Duration: 01-01-2010 – 30-09-2014

Team budget: 1 478 420 PLN

Total budget: 32 410 000 PLN

The main aim of the project was to develop the new tissue engineering technologies supporting treatment of bone loss in the maxillo-facial area resulting from resection of tumour. To achieve that goal 3 major tasks were necessary: 1) development of novel technology for customized tissue engineering product – bioactive scaffold of complex nano- and micro-structure, settled with stem cells, releasing biologically active agents, which support processes of adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of cells and formation of new tissue and extensive reconstruction of bone tissue defects; 2) preclinical evaluation of developed tissue engineering products (in-vitro and in-vivo animal studies), to prepare novel TEP for further clinical studies; 3) development of novel method of bone loss treatment resulting from oncologic surgeries applying the novel technology of tissue engineering product development and created complex computer systems. Our team was focused on developing the system for planning and aiding tumour resection and reconstruction of bone loss (in one surgery) applying medical imaging and intra-operative navigation. The system enables to follow the plan of surgery under control of tracking system using surgical instruments equipped with markers. One of system modules provides possibility to design and perform implant-prosthetic treatment using CT or CBCT data and intra-operative navigation system. Last but not least module provides possibility to objectively analyse the result of surgery in relation to the designed surgical scenario. The developed system was tested in operation room conditions on various skull phantoms.
