WROVASC- Integrated Center of Cardiovascular Medicine in Wrocław is a place of formation and evaluation of new medical technologies and treatment methods. Ciculatory system diseases, especially atherosclerosis, are main cause of death in Poland. Except for ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular and cerebrovascular disease ciculatory system diseases are the most common cause of permanent disability and poor quality of life. The foundation of the establishment of the Integrated Center Cardiovascular Medicine is integration of multicenter preclinical research and application of new medical technologies and biotechnologies to complex diagnostic, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Project WROVASC includes research on issues that are the focus of world medicine in the field of cardiovascular diseases.

Task 9

The main purpose of the study was an evaluation of mechanical and structular properties of blood vessels walls covered by atherosclerosis in different stages of developement of this disease. Based on histological rating of atherosclerotic changes observed in walls of obtained vessels qualification was conducted according to nomenclature by. Stary. Walls of blood vessels in every indentified stage of artherosclerotic were evaluated of mechanical, physicochemical and structular properties. For a first time atherosclerosis was defined in new light, because changes in mechanical and physicochemical properties were analyzed in accordance to stage of disease.

Obtained results have significant importance in application especially when designing and developing new and existing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, which are based on properties obtained form model, e.g. percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), bypass surgery, Raman endoscopy.
