About us

01
About us

The Biomedical Engineering Group operates under Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and was established in 1989. The Biomedical Engineering Group has extensive background in experimental methods in order to investigate the structural and mechanical properties of tissues along with analysis of bone-implant interaction phenomena. The group has experience with wide variety of soft tissues (e.g.: intervertebral disc, spinal cord, vessels, skin, fascia, tendon, ligament, cornea) and hard tissues (e.g.: vertebras, cartilage, femur epiphysis, long bones, ribs, teeth, mandible).

02
Research interest

– Mechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system and soft tissues
– Multi-scale analysis of biological tissues and body structures
– Biomechanics of the cardiovascular system
– Analysis of the diseases impact and therapy on the physical properties of tissues

03
We specialize in

– Mechanical testing of skeletal system components of small (rat) and large (sheep, pig) animals as well as humans tissues
– Measured in simulated physiological conditions (humidity, temperature)
– Biomechanical testing: Compression and tensile testing, three/four point bending testing, microindentation, soft tissues failure testing, cyclic testing
– Structural analysis: micro-CT, microscopic analysis and tissue density measurements
– Optical methods for strain state and displacement analysis

04
Laboratory

The laboratory includes techniques allowing multi-scale mechanical testing from macroscopic to microoscopic length scales. Standard testing techniques such as axial-torsional materials testing (MTS MiniBionix 858, MTS Synergie 100, MTS Tytron 250, 3D Digital Image Correlation System, imaging modalities of biaxial mechanical testing) or microindentation (CSM Micro-Combi Tester) and advanced microscopic imaging (Bruker mikroCT SkyScan 1172, Phenom ProX desktop SEM).

05
Education

The Divisions is pursuing undergraduate and graduate programs followed by doctoral programs.
